The Turkish American National Steering Committee (TASC) commemorates the 46th anniversary of the Turkish Cyprus Peace Operation, recognizing its historical significance in protecting the Turkish Cypriot community and ensuring stability on the island. On July 20, 1974, the Turkish Armed Forces intervened in Cyprus to prevent the ethnic cleansing of Turkish Cypriots and to counter the threat posed by the Greek Junta and extremist groups. Acting as a guarantor power under the 1959 London-Zurich Agreements, Turkey carried out a humanitarian operation that safeguarded human rights, stopped violence, and restored peace on the island. Despite international criticism and a subsequent arms embargo by the U.S. Congress, Turkey's determination and resilience led to the development of a self-sufficient and modern defense industry. The Turkish Parliament recently reaffirmed its support for Turkish Cypriot territorial rights, exclusive economic zones, and international recognition. TASC applauds the courage and resilience of the Turkish Cypriots in their pursuit of equality and self-determination. While nearly 70% of Turkish Cypriots supported the UN Annan Plan in 2004 for a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation, their Greek counterparts overwhelmingly rejected it. Despite this, the European Union granted membership to the Greek Cypriot administration, excluding the Turkish Cypriots from representation. TASC remains committed to advocating for justice, equality, and peace for the Turkish Cypriot people and urges the international community to acknowledge their rights and aspirations.
